September is here and the Oakland Athletics are making yet another stand in a pennant race. Oakland Manager Bob Melvin has been making a few important calls as the skipper and his team head towards October. Most notably, displaying the young talent in the bullpen and calling up Michael Choice to the big leagues.
Sonny Gray has been lighting up the mound lately, even receiving a standing ovation on Saturday’s game against Tampa Bay. Grays numbers are impressive. In 21 innings at home, Gray allowed only 11 hits and a handful of walks for a 2.57 ERA.
Although pitcher A.J. Griffin isn’t exactly new, his impressive performance and steady production are. The Athletics were propelled to a victory over Tampa Bay in the most recent series due to a stellar performance from Griffin.
With the bullpen in strong shape, Michael Choice has been called up to make an impact offensively. The outfielder has been placed in the DH position to “warm up” to the majors according to skipper Bob Melvin. Choice played well in Triple-A hitting 14 home runs and 89 RBI’s with the River Cats. Should he continue to swing the bat well in the majors, Choice could see a considerable increase in his workload.
Oakland is currently tied with Texas to lead the AL West division, both teams have 79 wins and are three games backfrom Boston for first place.
