Oakland is currently seated in the second of two available wildcard spots heading towards September. With a competitive 71 wins, they are only one game back from AL West leading Texas.
The American League as a whole has seen some pretty stiff competition as of late; Detroit is leading the AL Central with 73, and Boston has the AL East cinched up nicely with 74 wins. Its still anyone’s ballgame heading into playoff baseball and Oakland needs to ramp it up and stay on a winning regimen to ensure playoff candidacy.
Currently the Athletics are duking it out with Tampa Bay to see who will be able to lift themselves out of the wildcard spot and firmly into the playoffs. Tampa Bay has a slight edge with their .577 win percentage over Oakland’s .573.
With players like Sonny Gray and Brandon Moss stepping up recently, and the return of Coco Crisp, the A’s have a chance to put the heat on come September.
